The Great Pyramid of Cholula
The Largest Remaining Pyramid in The World

The Pyramid of the Sun at Teotihuacan is the third largest remaining pyramid in the world. The Pyramid of the Sun at Giza is the second largest remaining pyramid. The largest remaining pyramid is about 80 miles southeast of Teotihuacan, located at Cholula.

The Pyramid of Cholula is the largest remaining pyramid and monument known to be built in the world. It was built as a palace for the God Itzama. Construction began about 500 BCE and continued until Teotihuacan collapsed about 850 CE. The entire structure was covered with earth and abandoned. Today the pyramid complex appears to be a wooded hill with a Catholic Church on top of it. The Vatican always hijacked places sacred to local populations and constructed their churches on these sites.

The structure is about 1,500 feet square and 220 feet high, with a total volume of material of 5.9 million cubic yards. Although higher, at 455 feet, the pyramid at Giza contains about 3.3 million cubic yards of material. This pyramid and temple has been looted by “archaeologists” over the centuries, as others were, and damaged by highway construction, the material used for road construction.

I find it amazing that the largest ancient pyramid receives so little attention compared to other ancient sites. Of course, the “Church” has the site well controlled. The original native language name for the site translates as “Place of refuge for the Gods”.

The Aztec relayed a fantastic history for The Great Pyramid of Cholula to Catholic Priests in the 1500s. The Aztec believed one of their seven mythical giant founders, named Xelhua, built the pyramid.

The Great Pyramid of Cholula Legend:
The legend continues; 4,800 years after the world was created the land was home to giants. A great flood enveloped the world and killed all of the giants except for seven who sought refuge on a sacred mountain in paradise. After the disaster Xelhua, also called “The Architect”, built the pyramid as a refuge for the seven giants.

The pyramid was being built so high it was reaching the heavens and the Gods became enraged that anyone would dare try to reach them. They showered the construction with fire, killing all of the workers and destroying the pyramid. It was then dedicated to Quetzalcoatl.

There is much more to the legend but several things piqued my interest. They are: The Parallels of this legend to The Flood, destruction of The Tower of Ba’Bel, The Seven Gods of Old [worshipped by the Hebrews, Babylon and the Priests of On], the Great Architect of The Universe, and the reference to 12 cycles of the Maya Baktun, the 400-year cycle, equaling 4,800 years. If you go back in time about 800 years from the time this legend was told you would be at the time of the Rescue of The Lords. It would also be the end of a Baktun and the imagined travel time for rescue craft. Just a few things for your personal mind games.

An Artist’s rendering of The Great Cholula Pyramid and Palace from details of early explorations and modern seismic and ground penetrating radar. “The Refuge of The Gods” is the name given in legends.

This structure would not be out of place if found in ancient Sumer. Similarities to Ziggurat Temples are amazing.
